History and Heritage

Sweet marjoram, or its scientific name Origanum majorana, is a tender perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region. Its culinary and medicinal uses have enchanted herbalists and chefs for centuries.

Sweet marjoram has a rich history dating back to ancient Egyptian civilization, where it was used in herbal remedies and perfumes. It was revered among the Greeks and Romans for its culinary prowess and symbolic importance in cultural rituals. It was commonly used to adorn feasts and banquets, symbolizing joy and celebration at weddings. It was also a motif at funerals, conveying a sense of peace and comfort. This reflects the marjoram’s dual role in festive and solemn occasions throughout ancient Mediterranean societies.

Today, it remains a cherished herb in gardens worldwide for its flavor and therapeutic properties.

Qualities and Traits

A sweet marjoram plant features small, ovate leaves that are soft to the touch and emit a warm, sweet aroma when crushed. The plant grows compactly, reaching 12 to 24 inches, ideal for garden beds and containers. Its delicate white flowers attract beneficial pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity.

Uses and Benefits

Sweet marjoram offers various benefits beyond its culinary appeal, making it a valuable addition to any herb garden. In the kitchen, it adds a subtle sweet flavor to multiple dishes. Medicinally, it is valued for its digestive properties, helping to relieve gas, bloating, and indigestion.

Many opt to add marjoram to their garden for the following benefits:

  • Culinary Delight: Sweet marjoram enhances dishes with its mild, sweet flavor. Most people describe it as similar to oregano but milder and sweeter. It complements meats, vegetables, soups, and sauces, adding depth and aroma to culinary creations.

  • Digestive Aid: Sweet marjoram is known for its digestive properties. It can help with digestive discomfort, such as bloating, gas, and indigestion. It is commonly brewed into teas or added to herbal blends to promote digestive health.

  • Relaxation and Stress Relief: The soothing aroma of sweet marjoram is conducive to relaxation and stress relief. It can be infused into oils for massages or added to baths to promote a sense of calm and well-being.

  • Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory: Sweet marjoram contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds contributing to overall health and well-being. These properties help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

  • Natural Respiratory Support: Sweet marjoram has been used in traditional medicine to support respiratory health. It is believed to help alleviate symptoms of coughs, colds, and respiratory infections.

  • Easy to Grow and Maintain: This herb is low-maintenance and thrives in well-drained soil with ample sunlight. Regular pruning encourages bushy growth and ensures a steady supply of fresh leaves for culinary and medicinal use.

Maintenance and Growing Tips

Your marjoram plants can bloom knot-like buds throughout the summer with proper care. Here are some essential tips for cultivating and maintaining a healthy herb plant:

  • Location: Marjorams thrive best in climates found in Zones 7 to 11. Use our tool to find your zone and see if marjorams are a suitable addition to your garden. Marjorams are ideal for outdoor gardens or indoor pots near windows with plenty of sunlight. If your marjoram is potted, we recommend bringing it inside for the winter.

  • Planting: Start seeds indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost date or sow seeds directly into the garden after the danger of frost has passed.

  • Soil: Ensure the soil is well-draining and moderately fertile. Marjoram plants tend to prefer soil with a somewhat grave or rocky consistency. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can cause root rot.

  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. However, avoid over-watering as marjorams are prone to rot when exposed to too much moisture. Water at the base of the plant to prevent fungal diseases. Make sure the soil is dry to the touch before watering. Once your marjoram is established, it can withstand moderate droughts.

  • Pruning and Harvesting: Regularly trim the stems to encourage bushy growth and harvest fresh leaves for culinary use. Harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season. For the best flavor, gather leaves in the morning after the dew has dried but before the sun is high.

For Professional Outdoors Folks, THIS WORKS!
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50+
I am in the sun approximately 300 days a year and I have used everything available. I am on the water daily and there are only 2 products that 1) work and 2) stay on when wet; Blue Lizard and Doo's. Both have nutrients and moisturizers keeping your skin young. This stuff WORKS! Highly recommended.

Worked well for 4 days spent poolside in 104° temps
Color: White, Size: 0.15 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I purchased this specifically for the Zinc/ mineral based SPF factor. There are not a lot of great options for a sun BLOCK lip balm. This is about the highest SPF I could find, in a tube/stick applicator. We use 70 and 50 alternatively and apply often for our bodies and face, but we needed an extra layer for the lips. (They really are very delicate tissues) We like the texture, I didn't notice a flavor or odor, so I guess that's good right? I did not see any white cast to it and honestly I would not care if it did, I just want a sun block for my lips while we are poolside. It worked well. A slight tingly feeling to my lips for the first 30 seconds when applying it, but it did not sting or irritate my skin/lips. We went 4 days of poolside lounging and swimming with about 5-6 hours a day at the pool. We were in and out of the shade, in and out of the water, at at very dry desert Nevada 104° sunny location. We reapplied about every 1.5 - 2 hours, or if we felt like we needed it after eating or drinking something. We did not burn nor peel, our lips were soft and great. I will keep using it and will likely purchase again, when needed. It's a good brand. Aside from straight up old fashioned white or colored lifeguard zinc sticks, this is a less "clown like makeup" option.

Great Product
Color: White, Size: 0.15 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This lip balm was recommended by my surgeon to protect my lip from uv rays. Surprisingly, it does not have that yucky spf taste other lip balms have. It does create a white cast, but I find if I lightly put it on the cast is not prominent, and I am Caribbean with deep tan skin. Very grateful this lip balm does its job!
